Hi all!

So I am admidst rearranging my life everywhich way- and there is more to come on that topic, but I have a quick question for the moment.

Has anyone been to Granada or Seville? Because of the way my round the world ticket works, when moving my flight to Israel (which was supposed to be this week), I wasn't able to book another flight until October 21-- so I think that I will be doing a little bit of Spanish immersion now instead/ or in addition to later. So I am trying to deciede between these two cities.

Any thoughts? Email me or leave a post!

Thanks

Hey all,

So I am back in London and have moved into my "new flat" for 4 days, where I am living with a woman named Sue and her friend named Alex, who is crashing with her because he is renting out his flat as well. I am thrilled to be in this location. It is literally right in the middle of everything, right off the main shopping street (Oxford)- and is dangerously close to TopShop- and the Topshop offshoot store- which I realy shouldn't even look around in. However it is on this tiny little street, so you don't feel like you are crowded, or in the smack dab center of London, which is pretty cool. Here is a picture of the street I am on:
And here is "my room".

Anyways, went to check in with the doctor yesterday morning, and he seemed to think that things were improving ( thank god) however slowly. I am going to go back next week to see if the biopsy is still needed, and to see if an MRI is still needed ( I cound't get an appointment until Ot. 9th anyways.....) But this is good news, and though London still needs to remain my base until further notice, I should be able to pop in and out, and still go to Munich this weekend for Oktoberfest- and maybe I could even try to make it back up to Scotland? we shall see. I have to have a big chat with Brittish Airways to rearrange my tickets.

I still haven't been able to go get my photos of barcelona put onto a cd so I can put them on a computer, but here is a one I took in the market I wrote about, on my phone before my phone died. I love market places for some reason. The last morning I was in Barcelona I went to one of the houses that Gaudi designed, and got to tour the inside. It was really cool- I took way too many photos of that as well- and bought a calendar. haha

The funny thing that I realized in Barcelona, and on my first experience experiencing a city completely on my own, is that I have somehow still set these weird standards for my self on this trip. I have managed to create obligations for myself on a trip that is meant to be obligation free. For example, I woke up late everyday I was there, and I managed to feel guilty that I wasn't waking up early enough. I didn't feel like talking to other people in the hostel this weekend, and I felt bad that I wasn't doing what I was "supposed" to in the hostel. I wanted to order a steak, but I felt bad that I wasn't ordering the Spainish calamari dish I was supposed to. Its sort of ridiculous how many rules I still make for myself, and how guilty I can feel about nothing, and all by myself with no one watching- and I think that this is something that is really good for me to work on on this trip. I think I need to let go of the idea of"right and wrong". Sure, there is a fine line between staying in your comfort zone and just doing what you want to do- but the bottom line is that this trip is about me, and if I am tired and want to sleep in- there is probably good reason for it. And by allowing myself to just do what I want, I think that I will get more out of the experiences I actually choose.

I think that that was part of what was so great about Africa. You kind of just had to go with the flow, there were not a bunch of tourist sites to tally mark, and it was all about just experiencing what the day had for you- and even if you had a plan you had to just let Africa serve you what it wanted to- and it ended up being the perfect combination of experiences. I just have to keep being open to surprises, and let go of the guilt I feel when I am less interested in one thing versus another, regardless of how famous or important the tourist site is.

There you go, a little bit of rambling for you.

I am not going to feel guilty that it is now one o clock and I haven't left the flat. But I am going to thoroughly enjoy whatever activity I choose for this afternoon. haha

signing out.

the adventure continues: chapter Barcelona

Hi !
So. I am still in lovely Barcelona, though things here did not turn out exactly as planned (what is new). Friday night Kyle was supposed to arrive to meet me here- though it was supposed to be very late- perhaps 2:oo in the morning. And, ofcourse, my cell phone died so I have little means of getting ahold of him. So I go to bed here at Sant Jordi´s Hostel, and assume that Kyle will make his way here. But each time I turn over.... Kyle has not arrived. Finally I check the office at the hostel around 4:00, however I realize that it is closed, at which point, I assume that Kyle has missed check in - and that he will be along in the mornign. But when morning comes, I finally check my email to see what is up---- and sure enough, due to some stupid rules on Ryanair for non-EU citizens, Kyle has not been allowed on his flight, and never made it to Barcelona. ( Let´s add Ryanair to the list of airlines not to take-- or atleast take with caution).

So, I am here by myself. You would think that since I have been traveling for about a month and a half I would be used to this by now, but actually this is really the first time that I have been alone all trip. In London I have so many friends, Gilly in Scotland, and I felt like I knew a lot of people in the village in Africa- and there everything was so small that I had to work to have some alone time.

So yeah, my abrupt entrance into the world of autonomy was unexpected- so weirdly made me a little sad ( I mean obviously I was sad that Kyle couldn´t make it), and for the first time I found it a little hard to motivate to get out and do things- which is pretty ridiculous given the amount of things to do in this city.

But I managed to do alright. I walked over to the La Sagrada Familia, which is a cathedral that Gaudi spent the last 40 years of his life designing, and it still is not finished, but is currently beign worked on. It is some pretty intense art noveau architecture, though different from the art noveau of paris or brussels. These need pictures really to describe, which I will post when I get back to london.

I also went up the the Park Gueil, which is another od Gaudi´s designs, and was originally intended to be a leisure village with houses and stuff, but only two of the houses were ever actually built. That was pretty cool as well- everything was mosaiced and twisty. Again pictures are needed.

I am such a sucker for art in public spaces. I love it. And there seems to be some similarities between Gaudi´s work and Klimt´s- and for those of you who know, I am near obsessed with the work of Klimt- so that is pretty exciting for me. I am not generally a photo taker, but I was pretty much glued to the back of my camera for a lot of my day yesterday.

There is a lot of art to see. Street art included. And even the architecture of regular buildings is pretty cool. I also walked arounf the old section of town, which had a totally different, but equally rich feel to it. All the ¨streets´¨ are pedestrians only and you sort of wind your way through the old part of town.

The only bad thing about Barcelona, is that I am not the only one who likes it. This place is crammed with tourists- all shamelessly touting their guidebooks around. Perhaps this was just my personal perspective on the city, because I broke down and did one of those hop on- hop off bus tours yesterday because it seemed like a good idea for the infirmed ( ie me and my foot), but everywhere I went the tourists were swarming. Also I am staying in a hostel- so i guess that this has been my first truly touristy weekend on this trip, however, barcelona does seem especially plagued by tourism. It doesn´t help that I have been thoroughly unimpressed by every american that I have met thus far .

Anyways, I have one more thing I want to do this morning, and then I leave Barcelona- brief but great. I am going back to stay with Kyle for one more night (I am sure he is thrilled), but after that I have found a "sublet" in the middle of London for a couple days-----------with some real English people! haha.

Miss you all! I´ll keep you updated on fun things, and less fun things (the old foot) very soon.

Hi all-
So lots has happened since my last post- and yet still I haven´t written in a bit. This is not for lack of time, perhaps just lack of willingness to write down frustrating things because it makes them more true.
So, I went the next day (Monday) to the hospital in Glasgow to go get my foot looked at. What I hadn´t mentioned in my last post ( I don´t think) was that right before I went to Glasgow last weekend, I had visited the hospital in London and they were considering surgery on my foot if it wasn´t getting better by Monday- which is why I was sure to check in at the hospital in Glasgow. Anyways- though the Glasgow hospital did not reccomend surgery, they sort of shrugged their shoulders in such a way that I felt better going to seek additional advice. They reccommended that I go back to the Hospital of Tropical Diseases in London for better attention. Also- the only thing that they could think of doing was an MRI on the foot- which would be fine, except the healthcare system here (which I had until then been impressed with) would be unable to provide me with with an MRI for another 2 WEEKS!

So, I cut my stay in Glasgow tremendously short and flew out that evening- with just enough time to do three things: eat some vegetable pakora ( the ïndian¨appetizer that was apparently started in Glasgow), get a quick tour of Glasgow University (which is Gilly´s alma mater- and looks like Hogwarts), and have dinner with Gilly to try our best to catch up over some hagis.

Got back to London and crashed again with Kyle, and then another two nights with two other amazing people Heather and Maggie, and did little else but return to the hospital, and look for alternate housing (ie a sublet--- which is WAY expensive for an american in London). The MRI situation might not be so different here to be honest- but I am working on it, and I atleast felt I was in better care because the doctor I saw was the head of skin infection ( or something) at the hospital. I have to go back on Monday fort a biopsy.
Too much information, right? It is sort of ridiculous what a problem this has become. The doctor said I shoudl plan on either staying in the UK for at least another 3 weeks, or plan on going home for care- which means my entire intinerary is due for some re arranging. yucko

I am trying to roll with the punches- there are worse places to be stranded than London. I am still looking for a sublet, and I had a mini adventure looking at my first two places with the same woman and ended up spending about 3 .5 hours with her- but I am getting a little bit of a behind the scenes tour of London which is kind of cool.

ALSO- I am not actually currently in London. Kyle and I had planned on meeting in Barcelona this weekend anyways- and since I have nothing to do but wait for my appointment in London on Monday , we decieded to go still. I went a day early so as to be out of everyone´s hair in London- so I came in yesterday, and Kyle comes in tonight.

Barcelona is a great place to raise the spirits- I have to say. I love it. It is so beautiful and I had a blast just walking around today, down La Rambla , and through part of the old section of town. I stopped at a big market place today, and got a little over zealous when I bought a kilo of fresh figs ( I sort of forgot at kilo was over 2 pounds)- but it only cost about 3 dollars. Guess what I ate for dinner? haha

I also went to the Picasso Museum- which was pretty cool. It was in chronological order so you could see how he progressed throughout his career, which was pretty cool- especially because so much of it was not the geometric paintings that first come to mind. My favorite part was the two rooms devoted to his blue period. I walked in and I sort of got goosebumps- a rare reaction for me with fine art. It was amazing to see all these terribly evocative paintings in one room- paintings that I have heard so much about, but actually knew very little about.

I came back to the hostel after that- which is also in a pretty cool building. I can´t wait to see Gaudi´s architecture tomorrow.

As for my spanish- the 4 weeks I took this summer have pretty much completly escaped me- but it is fun to try my best.

Ok- well I am going to go see what there is to do at night here for a girl flying solo.

Miss you all!

the land of scot

Hello all!
So I am now in Scotland which is quite lovely. I arrived in Glasgow and my dear friend Gilly met me at the train station and we scuttled over to the space where her show/ evening of events was taking place. Her show was great- and it was in this outdoor space that was a sort of overgrown back patio. There was a barbeque beforehand, a band after, and lots of beer and good chat which made for a great night. The only thing that was at all amiss is that Scotland is WAY colder than I ever imagined it would be this early in the fall- and I was freezing my butt off. Thank god for the stack of blankets that Gilly put out, or else my newly african blood would have frozen.

Today one of Gilly's friends (and my new friend) Emma was nice enough to invite me along on her excursion to Larg- which is a beachtown- while Gilly striked the set of her show.
It was great- Scotland is so beautiful. We got "scampi ans chips" and then got apparently world famous icecream down the street ( it's at least the most famous place in scotland). yum.

Oh yes, I saw the smallest car in the world as well on the street today (above)!

This is just a photo from the car
A view of the sand near the water- I thought the ripples were pretty beautiful.
Here is me- bundled but thrilled to be out on the beach. Sadly I wasn't able to put my feet in because of my damn foot, but the walk was still lovely enough. Oh yeah- and other big news is that I got my haircut in London the other day- I don't know if you can tell.
A sample of the gorgeousness of Scotland. I recommend clicking on this one to see it closer-- it was stunning. I can't wait to see more of the countryside.

Tomorrow I have some chores to do- including visitng the Glasgow hospital to get the old foot looked at-- so much fun. I think I might rename my blog "Rebecca's Hospital Tour of the UK". Gilly recommended that I write reviews of the hospitals and compare them to my hospitals at home as a sort of personal editorial on the state of international health care. Not a bad thought...... :)

Anyways, I think it is well past time for bed, so I am going to sign off. More adventures to come.

Today is my last day in London! Tomorrow I am leaving at 9:00 AM to go to Scotland and see my dear friend Gilly and the fabulous show that she is directing.
I was "supposed" to go to Stonehenge today- however I am still taking it easy because of the foot thing, and by the time I got out of bed to look up the details of exactly how to get there- it just seemed best that I take care of other things today that I need taken care of. Disapointing, but true. I am actually really bummed- but of all the places on my trip- London is among the easiest to get back to, so I guess it was a good place for me to take it easy and recoup.

Last night I recouped by attending "Pricilla, Queen of the Dessert" at long last. For those of you who don't know- this was originally a sort of an australian cult classic film about drag queens and Ayers rock- and is actually a very good film I think. The juke-box musical version is definitely more in the drag show category than serious piece of theater, but it was a lot of fun- and I loved the ABBA throwbacks as an unabashed ABBA fan. :)

I also visited London's TOPSHOP for the second time today- which for me is an important experience, as I am TOPSHOP's number one fan and shopper. Most of you probably don't care about this, but for those of you who do (primarily thinking of Nickol and Scarlet right now).. I took a picture in front. ( ps. there is also a salon inside- what could be better?)

I will have to post that later- my camera is freaking out.

The other thing Kyle and I did yesterday was visit the Tate Modern- which is London's equivalent of the MoMA- and was pretty cool.

Anyways- I think I will be choring the rest of the day. Miss you all!

Hi everyone! Still in London.

Here the adventures have been varied- beginning with an impromptu trip to the hospital. I visited the Hospital of Tropical Diseases here, which had a clinic geared for people who had just come back from " the tropics". I went in and described my flu-like symptoms- non of which they were very concerned about, and my malaria test came back negative. But- they were really concerned about how long it was taking my foot to heal- so they gave me two options- to take another round of oral meds and come back later in the week, or to be really proactive and stay overnight in the hospital and get antibiotics by injection ( which is really what the doctor suggested). So... that is what I did. Checked myself ri
ght into the hospital. Walked right over from the Tropical Disease hospital to the main hospital down the street- the whole time with a vascular port sticking out of my hand and checked myself in (I couldn't believe that they let me just walk over there- that would have never happened in the states. ) But it was not so bad, and I was probably the healthiest person ever to be in a hospital bed. actually- the room there was bigger than Kyle's and the view was better- so I thought about staying longer haha.
anyways- so my first time overnight in a hospital is now added to my list of adventures. Foot is looking better :)
I have a few photos haha- just to document the experience,
but I cant get them from my camera to the computer without stopping at a pharmacy and putting them on cd- so I took some blurry pictures of pictures to show you- just so you get the idea.
Me lounging

below is kyle laying exhausted after carrying my things to the hospital like a good friend..... or actually is he in a food coma after all the McDonalds we ate ( you just can't deny my pleas for mcdonalds from a hospital bed).

This is what they tried to serve me for lunch. literally. A lopsided plate of.....what? I know hospital food is bad but this is a whole new level. I was glad that I had eaten 4 days worth of mcdonalds calories the night before.

So yeah-- everyone should definitely put the hospital on their itinerary when they make it to London.

Almost as fun as the hospital, was going to see..... Sister Act the musical!!!! wooooo! So so fun. I really think it will come to Broadway.

Also- yesterday Kyle and I went to an exhibit yesterday at the National Portrait Museum yesterday ( which in itself is a really interesting idea for a museum) and it had an exhibit called "Gay Icons" which was pretty interesting. Basically 6 gay men and women chose their own set of icons ( gay or not) to be displayed at the museum and their was a photo portrait of each icon at the museum. Pretty interesting.

Anyways- tonight I am seeing Pricilla Queen of the Desert the musical- so that should continue with the gay theme.

Ok that is enough for now! More coming soon.
